Should I buy a Watch Winder?

Should I buy a Watch Winder?

7th Nov 2022

So I know the most pressing question on everyone’s mind right now is do I need a watch winder for all of my amazing automatic watches?

Like most watches, it’s complicated. There are opinions on both sides on whether having a winder is worthwhile, arguments against include excessive wearing on parts and over-winding. If the watch is constantly being wound then surely the parts will suffer from wear and tear at a faster pace? Well yes, however, watches are designed to be worn almost constantly so if wear and tear are happening at a fast pace then it may speak to the quality of the watch. It is also important to keep the watches moving, not necessarily all the time, but you should be winding them at least once a month. This keeps the fine oils in the movement of the watch from degrading and clogging, one of the most common reasons we have watches in for repairs.

Another issue is over winding, while you cannot over-wind automatic watches as they are equipped with a slip-clutch that prevents the mainspring from being over-wound this does mean that the slip-clutch is constantly activated which can cause wear and even damage. This is where quality comes into play; while expensive the higher quality watch winders are designed to avoid this sort of complication many of them allow you to set the winding modes in the settings to decide how many turns, and for how long the winder should operate. These winders also have modes that give the watch time to rest when it is fully wound.

Overall if you have invested financially or emotionally in an automatic watch that is not getting the exercise that it needs and it is being left to sit for months at a time, then a high-quality winder from a brand like Wolf will keep your watch on track for you.
