Getting Your Battery Changed? Your Bracelet Probably Needs Some Love Too!

A battery change is one of those jobs that feels almost too simple to think twice about — you drop the watch off, we swap the battery, you pick it up. But while your watch is already on the bench, it's often the perfect moment to deal with something that quietly builds up on nearly every watch and rarely gets noticed until someone points it out: the bracelet.

What actually builds up in there

A metal bracelet, especially one with lots of small links, is genuinely difficult to clean properly at home. Day to day, it picks up a surprising amount — skin oils, sweat, soap residue, hand sanitiser, dust, and general grime all work their way into the gaps between links and underneath the clasp. Over months and years, that buildup doesn't just sit there looking a bit dull. It can genuinely affect how the bracelet moves, making links feel stiffer than they should and, in some cases, accelerating wear on the pins that hold everything together.

Most people don't really notice this happening because it's so gradual. It's only when a bracelet comes back from a proper clean, moving freely again with that fresh shine back in the metal, that the difference becomes obvious.

Why it pairs so well with a battery change

A battery change already means taking the watch in and having the case back off, so it's a natural, low-effort moment to also give the bracelet the attention it doesn't often get. It's a straightforward add-on rather than a separate trip, and it means you're walking out with a watch that isn't just ticking again, but actually looking and feeling the way it did when it was new.

It's also simply good value for the time involved. A proper bracelet clean uses an ultrasonic cleaner to lift grime out of every link and gap that a cloth or a toothbrush at home simply can't reach, followed by a thorough dry. It's quick to do alongside other bench work, but it makes a noticeably bigger difference than most people expect.

Something worth asking about next time you're in

If you're bringing a watch in for a battery change, it's worth asking us to take a look at the bracelet while it's already off your wrist. If it's looking a little tired, we're always happy to give you an honest opinion on whether a clean would make a real difference, and get it looking right again while we're already in there.
